Ultimately, the religious right’s antigay crusade boils down to reasserting the right not to associate with homosexuals in diverse areas of American life, from the military to the workplace, a right they do not apply nor dare advocate with regard to any other minority group. Such reckless arguments, going far beyond recognizing the right of religious people to make up their minds on matters of morality, improperly establish discrimination as a theological imperative, thus rendering gay activists’ suspicion of religious arguments in public policy all the more well-founded and driving the wedge between the groups still deeper.

Similarly, antidiscrimination protections, which have also come under attack from gay conservatives, embody, for the religious right, the federal government’s propensity to force homosexuality on an unwilling citizenry. But the logical extension of that argument is that gays and lesbians should be denied a roof over their heads and the ability to earn a living.

That position is not only cruel, but represents an abdication of the responsibility all Americans share to learn and live and work with one another.

We have seen this in the "marriage amendments". Is it unAmerican?

Its quite simple...laws to ban gay marriages are unconstitutional. The issue of gay marriages are a religious issue. Family values are religious issues and the 1st line of the 1st amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion". end of story.

What do you mean by "unAmerican"? Am I to suppose that "American" means good, wholesome, mom-and-apple pie right-wing Christian conservative patriotism? If so, I couldn't care less.

I don't need another discredit job by the agnostics and atheists to remind me that fundamentalists like the Christian Right would eagerly enact a law banning gay marriage. For what it's worth, let the gays marry if they want. Britain has already taken steps towards this, perhaps America will now move in a similar direction to solve this problem of it's own making.

More conspiracy theories... I just wnat to remind everyone that not all us in the "evil relgious right" belive in banning gay marrige, discrimination ect... Saying this is the goal of the "religious right" is the same thing as me saying all liberals wish to take away our right of self defense (make guns illegal), make it illegal to be a majority (affirmative action) ect....

Let's face it, the religious right has made bold efforts to make Christianity a "state" religion by making some of their more narrow-minded beliefs into law. Bush has certainly promoted this effort, and it is dangerous to the extreme.

Then what have you done to fight the bad name those Christians have given you? What has your church done?
