You're not understanding the fundamental difference here.
When churches and temples ask for donations they don't force you to pay them any amount, or keep a record of how much you've given, and how much you have or haven't given doesn't make a difference.
Now, with Scientology, in order to be a member you have to pay for audit counselling. How long does that go on? As long as you want to be a part of the religion? Hundreds and hundreds of dollars you are
required to give in order to be considered a member.
That's a lot different from asking for 5c-$20 for the poor box, or buying a religious text from Borders at $30.

Personally I think preventing the exploitation of the weak-minded is pretty important.
