When I saw the thread title I suspected it would be a discussion of the Hutterites, though there are plenty of other religious communes around.
Hutterites are anabaptist Christians, mostly found in midwestern North America. They're historically related to the Amish but aren't so technologically conservative. They live in rural farming communities where property and income is owned by the church and allocated to members on the basis of need, (ie: from each according to ability, to each according to need).
