According to dictionary.com the word beginning has 9 different definitions,
the word God has 8 different definitions,
the word created has 6 different definitions,
the word heaven has 6 different definitions,
and the word earth has 15 different definitions.

If you hope to learn anything from the Bible how do you open the combination lock of different definitions?
More often than not, the simplest, most plain reading is the answer.

Since Gen. 1:1 is found in the Bible, the God spoken of, is most likely the God of the bible.

Heaven should be rendered heavens and most likely means the heavens spoken of in the Bible. You know, the atmposphere and outer space with all the stars and planets.

The earth spoken of is obviously planet earth.

To try to make something more difficult out of it is just silly.

Not at all. We are talking about an ancient work. We are talking about people who had a very different view. We are talking about a completely different culture. To read this work as modern work, simply is ridiculous, as we wouldn't do so with any other ancient work.

We have to take into consideration the views of the ancients, the tools that they used to understand this work, and the common ideology that they would have had.

Why? We wouldn't read Shakespeare as if it was a modern work. To do such would mean that we loose much of it's actual meaning as we are ignoring the culture in which it was created. Why would we read an even older work, more removed from our culture, as a modern work? It just doesn't make sense.

Because then we can join an internet forum and make a lot of ridiculous comments about it and still feel smug.

Default The foolish ancients

In my 73+ years, I've read most of the bible and a lot of bit and pieces of a few other fairly important writings. Most of the metaphors and such are just that, nothing more or less. It really doesn't matter what the writers meant, or in which era they lived, by our standards of intelligence and understanding of why and how the Cosmos exists, we should have gained the level of co-existance to know that the ancients didn't really know crap.
For example: where did Jesus' body go ? Why did Ruth turn to salt ? From what are the thrones in heaven made, and with what are the roads paved ? And from what in the hell is a trinitiy made. Three entities that represent a mortal of fleshly body, a lot of spooky gas, and an impotent all powerful manipulator of all that exists in the Cosmos. And don't forget those fancy angels. I think I repeated the part about the body of Jesus going to heaven didn't I ? And a snake that talks ?
Wake up people, this is the real world, everyone is born, and everyone dies.
We don't have that much time to enjoy each other do we ?
But we fritter along the paths of idiocy trying to find ways of hating each other to the point of wishing each other's demise in some way or other.
It wasn't because the ancients were different from our thinking, it is because they were foolishly ignorant, just like a lot of us are.
Oh well....do what you will...you will anyway.

Default A sincere apology

I want to apologize to all who are posting here for my adolescent behavior.
But I used to tell my mother many, many years ago:
"He started it !"
Sorry about my behavior, I will go now, but I'll be back.
