Long before Abraham spoke with God, mankind had a multitude of religions. But lets go even further back to the earliest primitive man. These religions were mostly fertility goddesses and such. Now if God, (Abrahamic God), was around then, did he have a purpose for these religions? Did he possibly set them up for peoples not yet ready to see him fully? If not, then where did these religions come from? Was Satan stiring the pot early on and God didn't notice?
Thoughts?

God didn't set up any religion. They developed out of cultural needs. For example hunter/gatherer societies developed animism to help them understand and live in harmony with the natural world around them. Animism made them feel as they were part of the whole

Primitive religions are generally fear based.

So was early Judaism.

My religion is complicated, or my beliefs are anyway. I consider myself a Unitarian Christian and go to a Unitarian Universalists Church but I believe that all religions are merely humanity's attempt to explain the same thing seen from different perceptions. As to the question of whether that "thing" looks back and actively seeks to interact with humanity I don't know, it's something I'm still pondering.

I think primitive religion is a misnomer. We who live in industrial societies view those who live in pastoral or hunter-gatherer societies as primitive but their spiritual beliefs can be amazingly complex and sophisticated

Agreed. Primitive is a subjective term and often missused and misunderstood. Still I use it here in an anthropological context, as in pre-bronze age humans and their cultures.

But a growing religion can evolve from its fear based past to a love centered now, and more loving progressed future.
