I also wonder to what extent helmets alter behaviour. I've noticed that I tend to go a bit faster on a motorbike when I wear a full face helmet than when I wear a half helmet. I go a lot faster in leathers than I do in jeans.
Does this type of behaviour pattern carry over to bicycles?

Just like safety belts your decision has little difference on your perception of that which actually happens. As a casualty professional its easier to explain to your loved ones that that you did not waste mine and my colleagues valuable time, because you died of stupidity.

Let’s go the whole hog here, if you were basing your point of view solely on statistics you’d ban cars.
But banning cars is not REASONABLE or realistic..

Wearing a stupid helmet on a bike IS.They are cheap and it takes 3 seconds to put one on.

Why is it all or nothing?

I also wondered the opposite.Do people who wear helmets especially voluntarily tend to be more safety consious in general.IOW are they are less likely to throw caution to the wind.

Thats another point. The time AND the money it cost to treat someone with a head injury that could have been prevented if they would have taken a simple precaution.
I could understand if wearing a helmet posed a significant financial burden or caused significant inconvenience to the individual.

There is NO reason NOT to wear a helmet other than I dont want anyone telling me I have to which sounds like a 3 year old.

Sure there is Dallas.

Take the bike rental schem in Dublin. They rent bikes - not helmets. You can pick up a bike and cycle across the city and park the bike up. It's very handy, I can think of lots of reasons a person might want to jump on a bike at a time when they don't have a helmet with them.

O.K then I will revise..There no reason with FEW exceptions not to wear a helmet.

But even in your example the bike rental company could offer helmets that are included in the price of the bike rental.Small Med and Large.

But I would venture to say that the vast majority of people biking are not renting the bike. But even in that case there is no excuse that helmets arent offered or required.

On the rare exception that someone has to jump on a bike to flee from danger or in some emergency situation where taking the 3 seconds to put a helmet on is a risk to themselves or others then sure..screw the helmet.

Love

Dallas

You imagine wrong. According to Monta's study, a large majority of bike accidents requiring hospitalisation are due to being hit by a car. So do you approve of a 30 km per hour speed limit for all cars at all times? Car crashes are the number one cause of fatality, and being hit by a car (as a pedestrian) still ranks WAY ahead of bike injuries. Not only that but cars are the number one cause of bike injury deaths. IMO, a non-lethal universal speed limit would save far more lives than bike helmets.

Hi Dallas,

It's not important, but th rental scheme is a local authority one. There is no shop. You subscribe for €10/year and can pick up a bike from one of about 40 docking stations around the city. It's free for the first half hour and then there's a nominal charge after that.
