Someone asked this in the Jewish forum:
If it is used without malice, is it still considered disrespectful to refer to someone as a 'Jew '? Related to that, does anyone find it slightly odd that Jewish people are quite often collectively called 'the Jews'?

Depends on whether you see "Jew" as being a term of abuse or not.

Goodness, I did not know that. Just one more thing to be careful of so that I don't offend someone. When refering to all of them though, I am not fully aware of what I call them. I think I might refer to them as the Jewish People. what am I supposed to call them? Anyone one know what is correct here?

Not necessarily, and not at all.

I am glad you said that; I was worried for a moment.

I used to work for a Jewish guy.....seemed to me he never had a problem with being called a Jew.

Is it disrespectful to call someone a Christian or a Muslim.
the problem with Jew is that it can refer to their religion or their race. But I do not see it as disrespectful unless one adds a descriptor to it.

Quote:
All "Jewish" means is "like a Jew" for a person or "of Judaism" for a thing, which renders "Jewish people" equivalent to "people who are like Jews"... but they're not like Jews, they are Jews, and if there's something inherently offensive in calling someone a Jew (which I don't think there is), it's built into the adjective "Jewish" as well. |

ummm yeah, no!
i have no problem w/ being collectively called "the jews". altho i don't subscribe to the idea of the jews being a "race"....maybe a "people" but race, at least in my mind, is connected w/ ethnicity and jews come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
