Not only do you have to part from a routine of labor, but after making friends you say goodbye being "in" the circle.
I'm looking into a local movie theater and Barnes and Noble being built almost literally down the street from me. I decided that if I'm going to work during the school year, I need to find the job that pays the most and which I can actually want to move up in. Kroger only pays their unexperienced cashiers $6/hour. Even Wal-Mart has better wages. And no bad feelings towards those Rfers working in grocery retail, but you get some of the WORSE customers ever. At PetSmart almost everyone I ran across was nice. That's not to say all the customers are bad. Most are fine, and some even give me hope for humanity, but there are people who expect you to know absolutely everything about 300 varieties of produce, along with where "diet pineapple juice" is, and if you don't, you get yelled at. But yeah, quitting sucks. Hopefully I'll leave on a good note and be able to return without feeling *too* awkward. I like shopping at Kroger. Food wise it's superior to Albertsons, Wal-Mart, and Target, and it's cheaper than places like Tom Thumb and Walgreens. I just want to secure a job this year which I'll enjoy being part of during college, if I stay in this region. I'm also writing in hopes of getting published, but ha, I'm not expecting anything to come from it.

Oh, absolutely. Let's face it, if you're going to work a job just for the money, you gotta make your time worth the effort as much as possible. My husband and I discussed whether we were going to demand our son get a summer job (he's 18) but when I crunched the numbers and realized that he would be making as much cash (all off the FAFSA, mind you) working for my company for a whole week as he would make in an entire summer, I just hired him. He knows how to plant things properly without any instruction from me or my business partner. yay! He's spent the rest of the summer honing his programming skills -- I consider that educational and career-related. Quote:

![]() Believe me, they'd have NO compunction about firing your behind if they decided to take a dislike to you. Company loyalty ain't what it used to be, that's certain. Quote:
Still, it might be interesting to put it out there as sort of a shareware PDF. Then again, I *could* be spending the time working on my Ph.D. courses. ![]() |

I always dread quitting because it usually involves me wanting to kick my supervisor's teeth in. I'm always afraid I won't be able to leave quietly and will have to be escorted out...lol.

You could always move to Oregon, Gene. Our minimum wage is $7.80 per hour.
![]() I understand about having a job you actually like, nothing wrong with that. Check out Blockbuster. My daughter Lauren is working there while going to college. They are very student friendly, you can rent movies and games for free plus some Blockbusters close at 10pm on weekdays. And, just last week she was given 20 DVD's they were going to throw out. You've probably heard this before but, don't quit your present job until you have a new one secured. ![]() Good luck!

$7.80...
My supervisors make less than that. The only place around here I know that pays more than that for starting wage is CostCo ($11), but they're very picky with who they hire and don't hire below 18. I found out this morning our local Barnes and Noble is looking for employees with 2 years of relevant experience in the book industry. Somehow I don't think 5 months at PetSmart and Kroger will cut it. ![]()

Had I to do it over I would have worked at a movie theater or video game store.

I made around $2.35/hr. I made $4-5/hour modeling for the art department. On "drop in Tuesdays" they passed around the hat and I would normally make $100 for 2 hours work. It's tougher than you think to sit still that long (it's painful as heck), but for that money, it beat the heck out of drunken bosses. |
