I've always been interested in architecture and considered becoming an architect until I found out how much math was needed for a degree. I settled on interior design instead because I only had to take statistics.
I thought it might be fun to investigate some of the modern masterpieces of modern architecture with any other RF fans of building and design. When my husband and I travel, the majority of the pictures I take are of buildings. He wants to take pictures of hills but I always tell him we have those at home.....let's get pictures of what we don't have! Post your idea of a Modern Masterpiece of Architecture! Here's a building we don't have at home. It's the Jin Mao building in Shanghai, China and is China's tallest, the world's third tallest and the last gigantic building to be completed. The building was completed in fall of 1998 boasting 88 stories and is 420 meters high (1,379 ft). Retail shops are housed in the base, offices above and the last 38 floors are the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The Chinese lucky number eight figures prominently into the tower's composition. Each segment's height is reduced by one-eighth of the original base height and continues until the segment height is eight levels. At this point the Hotel begins and each segment reduces one-eighth of the 8-level segment until it reaches the 88th level. Eights also appear in Jin Mao's advanced structural engineering system which fortifies the building against the typhoon winds and earthquakes typical of the region. The composite steel-and-concrete structure features eight mega columns of concrete and eight of steel situated around the tower's concrete core. ![]() ![]() From inside the lobby....looking up ![]() Inside the lobby.....looking down ![]() |

Locally, I think the most amazing aspect of modern buildings is simply that they're able to build them in such tight quarters. All of Bosnia's major cities are very old, and all of these old structures are protected by law.
Here, for example, in Travnik - they're building a brand new shopping mall in the middle of half a dozen of the city's oldest mosques - and they don't so much as get dust on the surrounding buildings. That really amazes me. ![]() In a building sense, I like pretty much anything in the Middle East. They live like the Jetsons, despite what they show on North American news... lol Dubai, United Arab Emirates ![]() Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: ![]() Doha, Qatar: ![]()

The Kingdom Tower in Riyadh is definitely one cool looking building.
Is that a little mosque in front of the new mall? I love it. |

I'm just going to post a link for you, Rhonda.
http://deseretnews.com/confer/cctour/ Photographs of this building simply do not do it justice, but you'll probably find the article pretty interesting.

I've actually eaten dinner up in the restaurant in the CN Tower. I am terrified of heights and couldn't relax until I had a couple of drinks. ![]() Here's a couple more pics I found. The CN Tower is 1,815 ft. high! ![]() A view from the restaurant ![]() |
