On Christmas Eve night, I always take a walk in the woods out back of my folk's house. I end up at a vernal pond that freezes over to the point where I can slide around on it. From the pond, I can see the Christmas lights from my folk's house, and some of the neighbors'. I've been doing it since I was a kid. I'll admire the Christmas lights and skate around on the pond surrounded by dark conifers. It's truly magical!

Ayyam-i-Ha is our party holiday, kind of a mix of Mardi Gras and Christmas, in that we exchange gifts, but it's the days of partying before the Fast begins.
We decorate the house in red and white lights, lots of candles, put out the lace tablecloth, and have a special meal at least one night. Usually the community will have other gatherings, from a pot luck to arranging a special community meal at a local restaurant. We get together to play games and just generally have fun. Leap years are best, because then there are 5 days to the holiday, as opposed to the usual 4. More time for fun! Oh yeah, and as it happens at the end of February, we have a couple of advantages: after Christmas sales, everything is restocked on the shelves again, and no shopping crowds. Woot! |

We always let the kids open one gift on Christmas Eve, and it's always a new pair of pajamas(hee hee hee).
