Bratz vs. Barbie dolls, which one would you pick? (sex, Article)

I was never into dolls either, but my daughter loves them (she's 4 1/2). Zoe likes Diego too, but is not interested the toys. She's on a "I love horses" kick right now so most of her Christmas is going to be My Little Pony stuff. She's never asked for, and has said very little about, the Barbie and Bratz dolls other than to say her cousin Hannah likes them. I'm hoping it stays that way.

I love My Little Pony. I'm glad that some 80's trends are coming back.

Next should be She-Ra and Rainbow Brite. =) I want my children to play with action figures

Well, I'd have to say (despite having hated She-Ra with a passion, but then I am male) that that would indeed be an improvement over Bratz, Barbie etc. Traditional dolls of the baby type don't worry me so much (I can't get excited about buying them but they're essentially neutral) this tarty stuff really gets me. I hope Sabina turns out to be tomboyish because otherwise she's going to end up hating me - she certainly won't be, unlike some of the girls in our neighbourhood, walking around caked in makeup and dressed like a prostitute at age 12, which appears to be the sort of thing these dolls promote.

I agree with you about the dolls though. I hate that the child-hussy is the new tween fashion look.

Do you think girls today have positive role models in thier entertainment and toys? Hmm..perhaps that's a thought for another thread?

Dora and Diego's friend/sister/whatever seem pretty positive, but that's only really for the little ones. I don't spend much time watching children's programmes and Sabina's still too young for me to have looked too closely at girl's toys, but I'd say that there aren't many positive role models for kids full stop. It does seem to be worse for girls though and, given the way the world seems to be changing at the moment - in a way which I absolutely will not accomodate - I think that my daughter's liable to grow up thinking that I'm a relic of the middle ages.

Rainbow Brite is back! So is Strawberry Shortcake and Cabbage Patch dolls. My daughter loves all the stuff that was out when I was a kid, not that I played with the things, but my sisters did.
