it's due by 9am...
Here's the problem. I SUCK AT ECONOMICS! 1. What makes the Kolm index a poverty index? Please explain in plain English why the Kolm index qualifies as a poverty index and roughly why it takes the form it does. 2. What is a generalized entropy index and what is it supposed to measure. 3. Provide two examples of something that might be appropriately measured by a poverty index, a Gini coefficient and a generalized entropy index and explain why each measure would be appropriate for that purpose. 4. What does the U.S. government do with your taxes? Explain why the budget of the U.S. federal government needs to be managed differently than that of a typical household. 5. Suppose I wanted to know whether a particular ethnic group was being particularly hurt by an "inequality trap" and I had income, education, ethnicity and wealth data at the census tract level (a small geographical unit) what should I do. Please just sketch out the sort of things I might measure and if possible what measures I might use.

Well, I won't be of much help, but I know the answer to one of the questions.

OKAY... is anyone good at economics?
www.uwmc.uwc.edu/geography/Demotrans/demtran.htm 1. In your own words explain what is meant by a demographic transition. Discuss what sorts of factors are thought to explain changes in mortality and fertility rates and why deomographers think population levels might stabilize before resources are exhausted. 2. The link has a chart labelled The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Botswana. Explain what the various lines depict and what implications they have if compared to the two little charts just above comparing a) birth and death rates vs wealth and b) natural incras in population vs. wealth. 3. What realtionship did Ester Boserup see between food supply and population growth and what was her main historical example of that relationship? This is Greek to me!!!! ![]()
