I tried with maiden names...entered those first actually and still no luck.

Yeah, I was having some trouble finding some too - but luckily I had already pulled a lot of information and had it saved on my hard drive. I don't know how, but I had AFNs there that weren't showing up on a search, but all of the info that I have has come from familysearch, so.... I don't know what the problem is.

I'd definately search maiden names

Go ahead and use your adoptive family. This is all just good, clean fun anyway

It's sad that the family file I've been using to record my research is from another type of file- I wish I could just upload it into the Familysearch site!

Only deceased relatives work. Keep going farthur back into your family history and you will find someone that will bring up an AFN (Ancestral File Number).
