This has come up a couple of times and I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on the subject.
Let's say a person has a mental disbility, religiously speaking is it that deities will that, that certain person has it or can this person pray to get rid of it? |

The reason is, some ailments are physical, some are spiritual, and probably a mix as well. If we omit either the prayer or the doctor, we might miss out on the healing possibilities. I'm not sure what any deities' will is. Life has certain tests, yes, and ill health of any sort is one of those. But I don't think that, if it's some kind of test, that means you just have to lie down and accept it as a fait accompli when there are things that can be done to help. |

it is just a matter of brain chemistry and modern psychiatry is so primitive it is absolutly appalling. For example, if you belive some schizophrenic symptoms are that of a disease, get some egyptian come to me oil and smoke it. You will be paralyzed with terror at "faces coming out of the trees" visual hallucinations. it kind of hurts.

To address what Booko wrote: I know some people that say people are given mental disabilities cause they are either evil or they sinned, or Satan gave it to them and if you pray hard enough, God will take it away from you. |

I have always looked on mine as being 'part of what makes me me'....to pray to be 'cured' sounds totally wrong to me. To pray for anything for myself does.

I don't know if it's the will of a deity or pure chance. I lean towards pure chance, because it seems more likely than a supposedly good deity giving my family and loved ones mental conditions that cause them terrible suffering. I also attribute any affect prayer has on their condition as a placebo effect.

It can also be viewed as a test of faith and preserverance. One should pray and work hard to overcome limitations, and sometimes that includes visiting a doctor. God wants us all to reach our full potential, not give up when it gets hard.

Anyway, that seems one heck of a burden to place on any soul, esp. considering they already have more than their share. <shudder> Um...how is it someone born with a mental disability can have "sinned" to get it? ![]() |
