I think the title says it all really.
Recently i've been thinking more and more about just leaving this false materialistic world behind and living the life of an ascetic. What do you think?

I believe it's the Jainists that take it about as far as it can go. Check them out.

If you focus so hard on ending materialism in your life, you are still focused on materialism, but in a different way.

Asceticism is an integral part of my belief. fasting and deprevation from worldly needs can be an extremely spritual experience, creating connection with the divine which does not need worldly needs. i find nothing wrong with asceticism as long as it is in the the glory of god

I think extreme ascetism tends to be caused by, or perhaps leads to, mental and emotional disorder, and a dysfunctional life.
Aside from that, I've noticed many ascetics revile or hate the world, and I believe any doctrine, ideology, or practice that leaves you reviling and hating the world is a doctrine that fails to meet the challenges of living in this world. I also note that the Buddha explored ascetism before abandoning it for the Middle Way. Having said all that, I still think it might have some legitimacy: Everyone has their own path, and exploring ascetism might be appropriate for someone at some point in their journey.
