Of course, it was just the light reflecting off someone's watch or something! |

I believed that the ghost of my great-grandfather lived in my great-grandmother's house, and that since he didn't know me, he probably didn't like my being there. I believed that ghosts were everywhere, and mostly unfriendly. I believed that spirits lived in bodies of water, and that they could, if they wanted, grant boons to those who asked. (I'll still throw a coin into the river when setting off on a journey.) I thought there was probably something sinister lurking in the dark corners of my grandparents' basement. I believed it was possible to fly, if you could just learn the secret of it. I believed that when you grew up, you had to decide whether to go to Canada or Vietnam, and that the Pledge of Allegiance meant that if you went to Vietnam you had to die before you'd let the flag touch the ground.

I thought that my neighbors were secretly hatching alien eggs in my playhouse. (It was a dream that I had. I told my mom that I thought this and she set me straight!
)I believed that if I went in the basement of my house that I would be trapped down there and the house would be burned down. (Someone tried to burn our house down when my family slept in the basement on a stormy night when I was 10.) I thought that if only I could remember the "trick" to flying that I knew in my dreams, that I would be able to fly in real life.

My mom liked to lie to my sister and I when we were kids to keep us from asking questions... The best lie she told us was that street lights grew, and that was the reason the lights were different sizes. We believed this for a few years...
