Default Low-fat diet doesn't help cancer or heart disease

Just read a long article in the NY Times that says that an eight-year study of women shows that eating a low-fat diet has no effect on the rate of heart disease, breast cancer, colorectal cancer or other such diseases. Apparently this was a huge study and there have also been a couple of other ones with similar outcomes. It's interesting to find out that this has been a lot of hype all along...not surprising to me.

What does anyone else think of this?

Science is such a subjective thing. Stopped paying attention to studies a long time ago and started testing on myself to see what worked. Maxed out at 150 kg (about 330lbs) dropped from that to 75kg (160lb) in about 4 months, and am now about a healthy 90 kg (200lb).

Typical yellow journalism, is what I think of it. I heard a Dr. who is the head of nutrition studies at Harvard who cleared it up, which made a ton of sense. He said low fat, but still high calories will lead to the same level of cancer, heart disease, etc. . . . as a higher fat diet at the same calorie level.

A gram of fat has 9 calories in it, a gram of protein has, just like a gram of carbohydrates, 4 calories. A high calorie diet, regardless of the source of the calories, tends to lead to cancer and heart disease. A low calorie diet tends to lead to a healthier body, and you get less calories from protein and carbs than you do from fat, gram for gram, so the easiest way to cut calories is to cut fat, but if you double up on your sugars and eat the same number of calories, then you have done yourself no favors. (Think Snackwell cookies, low in fat and loaded with sugar)

Personally I think the study was flawed in that it didn't take into consideration the gene factor of family history. I have seen perfectly careful people drop over with a heart attack even with a good diet because their families were predisposed to it...they should have done the study on all folks with no predisposition to these factors to see what the results were. They also need to take into account other factors that weren't relevent at the begining of the study in that time.
