Wow, so I've been in Germany for a while now, and just seeing if any of the Europeans on the forums can confirm something... When I was living in the states, I was always being approached by women. Girls would always ask me for my number and take me out. I got used to this, so I never learned how to do the approaching. When I came to Germany, I got a bit lonely for a while. Here, pretty much every girl expects the guy to "lead the way" on everything. Of course I think most women have this expectation back in the states, but they also have the inclination to go after what they want. It seems that the women in Europe are less independant and still conform to what has been traditionally acceptable. Is this assumption correct?

No really, you must remember that europe still isn't one yet. If you would have crossed the border to the Netherlands I'm almost sure things would have been differently.. And if you would have gone down to austria you wouldn't have had the chance even if you were casanova..

I don't think I'll ever be able to go up to someone and tell them I think they're attractive. I can barely even concieve the thought of doing so online. ('So-and-so, I've got a crush on yoooo-uuuu!') Even if I were a man, if my personality was the same, I doubt I could ever ask anyone out. I think sometimes, with people, it's a matter of social norms, and at other times, simply the personality involved.

Hmm, doesn't sound like most of the German women I've met but I guess student exchange networks or opportunities to study in the UK tends to attract the somewhat confident anyway.
Cynic it might just be the part of Germany you're staying in. Last time I travelled through France my experience of people was so different depending on where I was at. Also, having lived in many places in the UK I've noticed the attitudes towards initiating anything romantic are extremely varied. Where I live at the moment the men tend to hapless bunnies and the women territorial eagles. |
