Hi everyone, I'm a new poster here. Im in a Sociology class and my professor wants us to find the female name for God. I've been looking everywhere and can not find anything. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this? Thanks for the help in advance.

Welcome to the forum! Unusual question; although we have had threads in which it was suggested that God might be female. I see no real point in giving God any name other than "God".

i love sociology, its amazing!!!! by definition, "god" is a title, not a name like we would give the queen the title of "queen", we give god the title of "god" as far as i am aware, YahWeh (or yhwh) is God's name god is supposed to be genderless, and in the original hebrew "god" was not appointed with a gender, God was neutral. However in english, we have not got such a word to imply this, so because we are (or used to mainly be) a patriarchal society, we appointed God as a he, as a farther. C_P

It really depends on whether you are looking for a name for any god, or if the Judeo-Christian God was what they were looking for. Sophia is sometimes seen as an aspect of the latter.
If you're wanting female names for god from a different tradition, I'd be happy to list some. There are only a couple thousand. ![]()

in terms of relationship with God, it is similar to that of a relationship between a farther and a sun, but i don't think you can take that to mean God is male so by the same terms, i would disagree with God being called a "mother" to define him in terms of gender, but to say his love for us is like that of a mothers is fine does that makes sense? I think your professor is just messing with you. God is formless/shapeless/unknowable, so therefore God is neither Male nor female. Male and Female are necessary components of Reproduction, and seeing as God can j |
