Here in Hot'lanta, GA, on Wednesday, Aug 31, many stations started the day charging $2.49/gal for regular unleaded, but after news reports warned people of supply problems, there was a panicked run on gas stations reminiscient of the 1970's gas shortages.

People were lined up for blocks, traffic was backed up, and many stations did run out of gas. By 8 PM, some stations were charging $3.29/gal. Man, I wish I'd held out for a TDI Bug instead of jumping at a VR6 Jetta.

Thanks for working that out Fluffy - but, take my point; I think we can easily claim to do less than 1/2 the milage our American friends do, as a norm.
That is true but I view the problem as self perpetuating. For example, my friend in America, and all of her friends, use their cars just for silly journies like going down the road because they are so used to using their cars. I don't blink at walking for an hour into town but a similar distance would be a car journey in America. I feel that since cars are required more often, they become more habitual but then I have only experienced this in a few isolated circles in America and wouldn't know on the wider scale.

IT went from 1.119 CDN a litre to 1.199/lt and is expected to go up to 1.300 soon. I'm buying a much a much smaller and more fuel efficient care either this weekend or next. The extra insurance will be covered by the amount of money in gas I'll be saving.

Looked it up 1.119CDN/ltre = 3.56US/gallon
1.300CDN/ltre = 4.13US/gallon

Out of interest, what is the Anual average mileage for an American car ?
I can get 23 MPG in my car. I know when gas was 2.60, I could get from Kokomo, IN., to Ottowa, OH., (about 150-200 miles one way) using only 15 dollars of gas with my tank full. But with gas prices being 3.50, and talks of it reaching over 4.00 soon, I'm going to have to start riding my bike to work and school. I'm just glad I can do that since it's only about 7 or 8 miles.

I take your point; and the only part of the States I have been to was Florida; and boy! Could I understand why nobody walked! Their little side roads were bigger than the M1!But I guess that was just the tourist area. Besides, I did try and walk one day - with the humidity, I was drenched within five minutes.

Besides, I have friends who use their cars to go to the corner shop here, in England. You are right though, we have all become used to using cars, we take them as a necessity.

Oh yeah I forgot about the temperature difference lol! *bangshead*. There was a television programme the other night about how much a family would save a year if they cut out on all these small car journies and just walked instead. Came to over £2000 a year... perhaps that is becoming more and more typical?

Gas price around New Orleans is over $6 and almost $7. We shouldn't be complaining.

Days that are almost 100 degrees F plus humidity make it a bit difficult to travel without something that moves fast enough to circulate air. Plus all the asphault absorbing and reflecting the heat. Not fun.
