Default Happy Fathers Day

Here's to all the wonderful men who take time for their family. Thanks for all the days you get up and go to work to help support us. Thanks for all of the times you showed up at our school plays, sporting events and recitals. Thanks for teaching us how to play ball, ride a bike, swim and drive a car. Thanks for teaching us how to be good people.

As for my own father who passed away many years ago, I love you daddy and miss you very much. Thanks for all the times we sang harmony, thanks for helping me with my school projects, thanks for all the laughs too.Remember the time you called me to the window only to point out my boyfriend walking up the block and then you said he walked like an ape? At first I got mad but when I looked at him walking , I had to laugh 'cause you wre right! You taught me compassion and understanding, you taught me how to respect my elders. You gave up so much of your own life to raise me all by yourself. I wish I could have been able to make you life happier. I would give anything to have you back just for one day just to hug you and tell you how much I love you and how much I appreciate all you did for me. We could sing harmony to the old Bobby Vinton song, "Roses are Red My Love." I hope I have made you proud of me. Love to you from Martha Marie, your little sweet pea.

I have been thinking a lot about my dad all day (he died in 1997) - he was a 'one off' which is a polite way of saying that he could be awkward (I guess I have inherited that from him!). I guess your highlighted bit above reminded me how much I do miss him.

I was particularly touched this morning, when Marie brought out two cards from our sons (I hadn't seen them in the post) - one in particular was very poignant, and brought tears to my eyes - I'll reproduce it as an attachment.

I am pretty sure I remember him drawing this at primary school (I wonder from whom he gets the 'I'll never throw anything away? ); I think it probably was for Father's day at the time (Quite why he was 'missing me I cannot remember).

Default The Shadow Side of Father's Day

I think it’s wonderful to remember – and celebrate – the good qualities of our fathers, and to remember all that they have given us, but I feel it’s equally important not to fall into the trap that so many in our world do, and that’s only remember their positive qualities and block from consciousness their negative qualities. This idealization of fathers, so common in our world, allows us to blindly replicate the worst of their behavior on those over whom we wield control (namely our children) and not even be able to acknowledge we’re doing it, much less acknowledge the harm we’re causing.

To me, in order to celebrate Father’s Day honestly, it is vital that we know the full scope of our fathers, both in terms of strengths (which is easy to do, because society applauds us for loving and admiring our fathers) and in terms of weaknesses (which is much more risky, because you lose conventional society’s approval).

As for the reality check of my father which someone brought up I should also mention the following; my dad was an alcoholic who was occasionally verbally mean to me when he was in his cups. Yes it left some scars, but I moved past that and forgave him. He was the first one who loved me unconditionally. That is not to say that he didn't get mad at the things I did, but after the storm, he always stood by me. This is why I can forgive him his faults, he forgave mine. I believe that my heavenly Father does the same with us. He loves us unconditionally and forgives our faults and stands by us no matter what. Thank you father and thank you God.

Joyfully,
Martha
