I'd like to discuss a topic I feel quite strongly about with everyone. It's a concept I've dubbed "Pink Fascism".
WARNING, THIS WILL PROBABLY BE LONG - I TEND TO RAMBLE EVEN WHEN IT'S SOMETHING I'M NOT THAT PASSIONATE ABOUT Pink Fascism In my mind, this concept is basically a new form of (admittedly softer) fascism, where there is tremendous discrimination within the gay community from those who perceive there being such a thing as a "gay personality". Pink fascists will tell you what it means to be gay, in terms of personality, lifestyle, dress, interests and more. In short, they will tell you how to run your life according to some sort of gay standard. I reject this principle utterly, and do believe that it is, in terms of its nature, a new kind of fascism designed to standardize the gay community and forge some kind of identity to enforce on us. In this way, they can dub those of us who don't conform as some kind of traitor or "lesser gay". Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the majority of gays are pink fascists and I'm some kind if hero. In fact, I believe that many gays are like me and hate such an idea. But a fleeting glance at history will tell you that fascism only requires a powerful minority in order to consolidate its power and strengthen itself. Ideas of the Pink Fascists Pick any highly stereotypical gay feature and thou shalt understand the thinking of the pink fascists. Camp/effeminate mannerisms, hair product, designer clothes or even items of women's clothing/accessories, an aversion to team sports or outdoor physical exercise, an obsession with the gym and perception of the gym as a cruising ground, a love of cooking and other home-related activities, obsession with hygiene and tidiness, obsession with gossip and celebrity drama --- the list goes on. In the eyes of the pink fascists, those who are not like this are not "real gays". Who is the world's biggest Pink Fascist Haven't heard anything from him recently. But back in 2007-2008 it was definitely Chris Crocker (the crying britney fan on Youtube, "leave Britney alone!", that guy). These days it's hard to tell. I'm in Beijing and there are loads of them here. The Chinese watch western media (which is highly Pink Fascist by the way) and believe that there is a standard for gay. The Chinese are obsessed with standardizing everything in their lives. It's quite annoying. As a result, the People's Republic is now also the Pink Fascist Republic. Does anyone else have any experience dealing with Pink Fascists? |

Ironically enough however, one of those friends is what you might consider more evidently effeminate that your average straight “dude, yet he is most outspoken in his low regard (putting it gently) of “flamers”or what old-school folk might have classified as “limp-wristers”, or “single -gentleman” in their 60s and beyond. He can get fairly insulting and vehement about it... much more so than I would ever dare, were I even incline to be that outspoken about it... That exception noted, I can not think of another openly gay man or lesbian I know today (personally) that “seems” particularly (or not really) gay, or might otherwise peg someone’s “gaydar” at the pinned max measure. None meet the descriptor or behavior you characterize as “fascist”, but then, I have no doubts that you are more engaged and experience in the company of gay people that I ever have, or likely to match in my life time. Honestly, I don’t really give it much of any thought, but then again, I’m not a cared-carrying member of that “community”. It’s tough enough just being a liberal progressive, and middle-aged married and straight white guy living in the very buckle of the Bible belt today. You have my sympathies in confronting “Pink Fascists” as best you may, but in the greater scope and measure of things, it’s not a priority of thought or injustice I can devote much time to campaign either for or against ![]() Best wishes

The main idea behind it is simply the idea that there is such as thing as a gay personality, or a gay identity. In my mind, sexual orientation is just that --- SEXUAL. It really is limited to who you like to bone and who you get sexually excited over. The clue is in the name!
I really resent the creation of any kind of "typical" gays. In Beijing, my friends like to refer to me as "the straightest gay guy in the world" - a name I got one day when I arrived at a bar to meet them wearing sweat pants and a rubbish hoodie, and promptly ordered a pint of lager. The guy next to me, a straight friend dubbed "the gayest straight man in the world" - was in a loud pink shirt, girly crossing his legs and ordering a mango daquiri or something. The picture went on Facebook under the title "spot the poof". Now, amusing as that sounds, it kind of typifies my point. I like the fact that people don't immediately identify me as gay. It's also kind of fun watching people's expressions as they find out that you are, haha. Anyway, I'm also criticized by some of my gay friends, for not being "gay enough" this is the pink fascism i speak of |
