How long do you suppose it will be before gay marriage is recognized by the governments of most industrialized countries?

recognized by governments? I would have thought that it would not take long; in the U.K it would actually save the government money (Benefits given to two separate 'couples' are greater than to married couples; with the European Court of Human Rights behind them (And with little 'input' from Churches - since this will surely come under the 'civil' heading, I cannot see that there can be opposition; especially since we (in the U.K - known for our humanitarian principles which have been abused by so many for so long)expect to be in a position for a general election in the not too distant future........
We all know how politicians will 'bend' to the wishes of minorities in order to secure more votes, especially if they think that this means that the public will interpret this to mean that they can be seen to be being caring and non -judgemental.

I think it'll take a while. I said within two generations...I hope. Hooray for the UK, parts of Europe, and parts of Canada. The U.S. needs to get their tail movin.

I think once Canada recognizes gay marriage, it will prove harder for the States to not recognize it.

I doubt it's ever going to happen in the US of A. I mean think about it. Is there actually a politician that has stated: "I am the (Treasurer, Vice President, Governor, Mayor, etc.) and I am getting married to someone who is the same sex as I." Think of the publicity and the lack of votes for the next election. In the US of A, they are banning gay marriages. They had a lot of controversy over her in our town about gay marriages. The mayor of New Paltz performed some of the ceremonies until he got in a lot of trouble over it. He was only suppose to marry 2 couples until hundreds started to show up. He had to stop because of all the politics mumbo jumbo.

You have to think about who is voting for politicians now a days. There are a lot of people that are against gay marriages and I for one feel that they should let it be. If they want to get married, let them. If they want to adopt children, let them. Just because they are a couple of the same sex doesn't mean they can't be together for the rest of their lives. No wonder there are a lot of problems here. Those who oppose gay marriages have nothing else better to do then to stress themselves with other peoples lives.

I believe it will happen before I die.

I don`t even think it`ll take a generation.

Here`s why.

Many industrualized countries do already I believe or they are on the verge of doing so.

Those who are against gay marriage in the US screwed up when they passed those 11 constitutional amendments opposing gay marriage.
They screwed up because they sped the process up.
Many (If not all) of those amendments were immediately challenged and they will fall, they have to considering our national constitutions and all of those state constitutions that were altered directly prohibit the type of discrimination the new amendments amount to.

The antigay crowd really are the ones to thank considering it might very well be a couple of generations had they not pushed so hard so fast to oppose gay marriage.

I will admit being a bit rusty on the U.S. constitution, and I don't think I have ever read my state's, so I cannot definitivley say anything about that, but, I thought the only reason the Louisiana amendment was brought down was because it had too much in it, not because of its constitutionality or lack of.

I really hope within my lifetime! Of course, then the trouble will be in trying to explain to any grandchildren why anyone thought being gay was 'immoral' in the first place.

Come to think of it, I hope the world does come to that. That'd be worth the 'trouble' of explaining.

Not soon enough! But I think it will be within one generation. The country will come out of the spell the Radical Right has put it under in order to whittle away civil liberities, and will recognize that the BGLT community should have equal rights, including marriage.
