"...34 percent of Americans polled said the First Amendment 'goes too far'; 46 percent said there was too much freedom of the press; 28 percent felt that newspapers should not be able to publish articles without prior approval of the government; 31 percent wanted public protest of a war to be outlawed during that war; and 50 percent thought the government should have the right to infringe on the religious freedom of 'certain religious groups' in the name of the war on terror."
'State of the First Amendment Survey' conducted by the University of Connecticut in 2003 I wanted to poll the people on RF as well!

Timely poll given that Snyder v. Phelps is going to the Supreme Court. Correction. The SCOTUS is going to hear the case.

I think Americans are best understood in light of the work that's been done on the Authoritarian Personality. A sizable number of Americans have authoritarian personalities. Perhaps 30% or more. People of an authoritarian bent are more or less incapbable of valuing -- or in a sense, coping with -- liberty, freedom, and democracy -- they intuitively seek a more authoritarian form of government.

sad state... but then it's easy to take freedom for granted... you don't miss it until it's gone.

Of course. That's why the world loves and hates us all at the same time! Were a nation of mutts and pit-bulls.

The reason being that the press can do and say whatever it wants with no repurcussions. Take Fox for example. They have been busted numerous times flat out lieing and editing footage to flat out lie and what happened? Nothing. That is far to much freedom.
