I have heard people say "it's my life and what I do is my business, it doesn't hurt anyone else." What do you think? Doesn't each little act we do spiral out onto several people? Do we have a responsibility to others?

I think we do. If nothing else, it's the butterfly effect, except with people. One angry person says something nasty to 4 people, they turn around and do it to 4 other people, and soon the entire world is angry. If we focus on kindness and truth, it would be these things that tend to gravitate around us, instead. I don't think focusing on how it will effect yourself is an altruistic way to be nice, but it might be the only way some people understand.

Life is not living inside a bubble, for even that effects others.Empathy ,if not properly controlled ,can backfire on you just like any other emotion.Toomuch of a good thing .
On the other hand, doing whatever you want whenever you want can be doubly damaging. We are all just people and make mistakes.Erring on the side of caution is always better for me, but I like to weigh each situation individually. It's all about considering the cosequences of your actions, some thing many people don't do. It is a tougher question than I had first considered.I'll have to think more on it. ![]()

This is the line usually used by petulent teenagers trying to justify the unjustifiable. Rather than grow up, they see fit to get defensive as this is the only defense left. Such a shame.

Unless we live in an isolated bubble we usually have a responsibility towards others. I have a responsibility towards my husband, children and grandchildren and to a lesser extent to my parents and extended family.

I agree that it is acceptable to do what you will as long as it does not negatively affect others, but many people have a very limited realization of the affect their lifestyle has on their world. The ordinary lifestyle of most people in the world id not ecologically sustainable. We must ask ourselves if our present way of life is going to be possible for our progeny a thousand years from now.
