A sex offender, without disclosing his real name, walked into an Oregon high school, signed in at the front office and then asked to speak to a high school art class. With no resistance at all, he was allowed to talk in front of the class.
Sex offender shows up at Philomath High School | KVAL CBS 13 - News, Weather and Sports - Eugene, OR - Eugene, Oregon | Local & Regional News How could this type of situation be prevented? Could this happen at any high school?

I think it could only happen at a middle-class public school. Really, there is much you can do to prevent things like that from happening. If he just ended up talking to the class about art, that would have been cool in my book. The asking kids to come to his house for free private lessons, that was the bad part, and they caught him because of it. If he had not said anything creepy, no harm would of came out of it. But he did, and they recognized it. Sounds like they took care of the situation pretty damn well.

If a bunch of rag-tag ****** off middle eastern men with crazy conviction and even crazier plan to hijack our own planes and crash them into the twin towers, I'm sure anything else is possible. Especially this creepy guy.

Schools don't carry "do not admit" lists, so unless the person manning the door already knew who they were there pretty much was no way for them to know he was on the sex offender list.
Would I have let him speak to my classes? As long as he didn't do anything inappropriate, sure.

It just seems careless to allow a stranger off the street and into a classroom with so little forethought. That's the part I don't get. Quote:
That scenario doesn't sit well with me at all. A school should above all things be a safe place for kids first, a house of education second. ![]()

One year I didnt sign up quick enough for the background check and I was told nicely I could NOT volunteer at an out door event counting how many laps kids ran around a field for donations for the school that parents had pledged for to raise money...this was at a school that I had 3 kids attend over 12 years at that point and I had volunteeerd many many hours at and the principle and teachers from k-5 knew who I was(and the janitor) ...I was NOT allowed to volunteer because I hadnt been cleared with the background check YET.(for that year). On the one hand since Im not a child molester its a pain in the *** that I cant just go sign in at the office and depend on the fact people know me and I have KIDS attending the school..(or I wouldnt be there otherwise) to volunteer..On the other hand THANK GOD not any stranger can walk off the street and roam around a school my children attend by simply stating they want to give a "speech" to the "art class. Love Dallas

Yeah, I guess I am ok with it if he didn't do anything wrong, but he was obviously trying to hook up with kids. Had he earnestly went into the school and just talked about art, no, I don't really care. But he did, and it was obvious, so he was kicked out. Just because someone is a sex offender (and what kind in what context), doesn't mean they aren't qualified artists.

My youngest son is 10, and will be going to junior high next year (yes he is advanced
).Just today we went to the middle school he will be attending, and it is completely closed due to snow this weekend. I told him to walk up and see if the door was open, and it was. So I figured hell I pay taxes, so the school is practically mine anyway, so we went walking around the school to see what it was like for him. It was really cool. Anyway as we are leaving in walks in a burly man, and say "WHO ARE YOU!" I said hey I'm Mike, WHO ARE YOU! He told me the silent alarm was going off, and all the doors should have been locked. I told him the door was open so we wanted to check out the school. He was cool after that, but it just goes to show, NEVER trust ANYONE or ANYPLACE with your kids!!!!!!!! |
