France looks to ban the burqa
France is gearing for a fierce debate over whether to ban the burqa, the head-to-toe woman's cloak promoted by Muslim fundamentalists as obedience to Islam but loathed by feminists as a symbol of oppression. Should France ban the burqa? |

I think if some women want to wear a burqa, that they should be allowed to. On the other hand, if someone is forcing a woman to wear one, then it should not be allowed...
The only trouble is how to know the difference. I think the choice is the womans, and the government can't really have a say unless a woman is being tortured or something by use of a burqa.

I don't think they should ban it. Like Buttons said, some women want to wear it. You cannot just tell people what to wear. They shouldn't be forced to wear it of course.

I agree with all of you thus far. If France banned the burga who is to say they wouldn't someday prevent nuns from wearing their habits? If there are Amish people over there would they ban them from wearning their religious clothing?

The French government has more important things to do than telling women what they can and can't wear. I doubt they'll give a fiddler's fart about burqas when their water runs out.

Sarkozy proclaimed that this prohibition of the burqa is wholly in the interest of female dignity. In the interest of female dignity? What exactly is more degrading to a woman's dignity than dictating to her what she can and cannot wear?

I voted yes because its up to France. If the French went to Saudi Arabia, would they be told how to dress, yes. Would their religious symbolbs and dress be tolerated? Definately not. I think women should be allowed to wear whatever they damn well please but i will be honest and say i find a Burqa intimidating. Thats the reason i voted yes, i can see how the French would be wary of having women wear burqa's because it is not a common occurance in their society. However, in saying that, they're going to cause more trouble than its worth getting rid of Burqa's.
I'm 50/50 on the issue. Voting yes did not reflect my true feelings because i can see both sides of the arguement.

How do you tell if that's really a woman under the burqa? I could imagine men wearing burqas so they can sneak into the womens restrooms. I'm talking about shorter men with padding to make their hips wider, of course. On Saturday Night Live once they had a Miss Afghanistan Pageant with several women on stage each in a different color burqa so you could tell them apart.

If you ever go into the women's restroom you may find it really isn't all that sexey in there. They usually smell bad and the doors on the stalls are kept closed for privacy. Just don't be in a hurry and wait your turn in line. |
