Not having a gun in the home for protection from possible attacks?
OR Having a gun in your home that one of your children could either accidentally or purposely kill themselves or another with? Which is more important to you considering that the chances of your child somehow coming across your gun is greater than the chance you are going to have a home break in by violent armed criminals that you actually have to have a gun to get rid of? Considering the effectiveness of systems such as Brinks Home Security and such, is owning a gun really all that necessary? Especially when you consider the risks it may present in your own home? Another question for avid gun owners: Would you still be adament about owning a gun if the crime rate in your country dropped so significantly that no one would even worry about locking their doors anymore? Would you still insist on having a gun? Speaking as someone who was in the military, and is actually quite a crack shot, I just don't get the allure of having a gun in my home. Certainly not with having kids in the home. No matter how safe you think you have been. Locks, placing the ammunition in a different place, all that, children can figure these things out. Trust me. And if you take all the safety precautions you can to keep your children safe then how readily and easily available is your gun to you in the case of an emergency anyway?

I think the risks of having both guns and children in the home can be nullified by proper education (supported by my own experiences), so I would rank it below not having one when needed.

Have you considered teaching children about guns and gun safety? I don't know the exact statistics but I would suspect most of the accidental shootings were done by children who had never been spoken to and taught about guns. I grew up in a house surrounded by guns. The walls in the living room of my grandparents house were covered in gun racks that held hunting shotguns and rifles. But we were taught not to touch them and we didn't.
I wouldn't say I was an avid gun owner, I don't have guns in my house currently, but I don't see a problem with it either. The problem is with parents not knowing how to raise their kids around guns.

Proper education of a child that may be depressed, suicidal or disturbed isn't going to change anything. And keeping your gun locked up and having the ammunition in a seperate place isn't going to help you in the case of an emergency. You're going to spend vital time you could be escaping, calling the police, or grabbing a baseball bat or pepper spray, just trying to get your gun and ammo and loading it. It doesn't make sense.

It wouldn`t take much to tilt the scales toward gun ownership. Quote:

Can you cite the effectiveness of a home security system stopping a determined murderous intruder?

And accidents still happen even with education. I lost a high school friend that way. In fact, he was helping to instruct his younger brother, alongside his father, before a hunting trip, when a gun misfired and shot him through the chest. Can education help prevent accidents? Yes. But accidents can still happen even with education. And never, ever, underestimate a child's curiousity. I know I was told over and over not to play with fire and all the damage it could do. I still did it. I know I was taught all the dangers of smoking. I still did it. Why take the chance?

almost no burglarys here and if they do they get to deal with me and justifyable "selfdefence" (or as i like to call it beating the crap out of them and feeding it down there thoat again) |
