I haven't felt lonely in years, although I spend considerable time by myself. I think loneliness, like all pain, can focus us too much on ourselves. That's not very good in the long run. When we are focused on ourselves, we are withdrawn from this world.

That pretty much sums up what I think too.

Lonliness can be destructive...but 'lonliness' does not always equal 'alone'. You can be surrounded by loved ones, and still be lonely...on the other side of the coin, you can be totally alone, and not be lonely at all. Lonliness is a state of mind, not a state of being.

In some very real way, I think that "all there is is love and love is all there is". Its actually sort of a religious statement for me. However, that being said, there are in fact many other things, of perhaps lesser importance that do factor into one's day to day life. I am not sure if I believe in loneliness or if I think it is just another word for sad or depressed.

I think it can; sorry I KNOW it can, because, to me, God is the embodyment of Love, and God is omnipotent. I try to put that into practice, and still trying- at least that's what my wife says, she says, yes dear, you're very trying! I don't like lonliness; tahat is not part of -as I see it - the 'Brotherhood and Sisterhood' of all humanity which, again, as I see it is the only way. We are all brothers and sisters; if you're lone ly there's something that youre not getting quite right.

When you've worked the solution to that one out, let me know the answer, please!

I have to disagree Carrdero, even tho I wished that I believe you are right. Lonliness is an internal struggle, having little to do with how many people there are on this earth and the opportunities for social interaction. One can be lonely even in the middle of a party in Times Square. One can be lonely even if one has friends who love, which not everyone has btw. If one is able to overcome it, then yes, it builds character. But many people are not able to and it can be forever. Or seem like forever, and in the realm of human perception, human perception is reality.

I think that perhaps you are right. And I think that perhaps lonliness/depression is a lack of love for oneself.
