When, if ever, is violence justified?

When the individual realizes there is no choice within her or his worldview.

If when, you have NO choice but to be violent.

I don't believe that violence is ever justified. But it is unfortunately sometimes necessary.

When is that? At what line do you draw a boundary of when it suddenly becomes an appropriate response to whatever situation you are in?

When you are in risk of seriously being damaged, or someone around you.

At what point do you give up on peaceful resolution? Or escape? Does it just take the imposing threat of violence towards you, or an actual action already taking place (like being struck)?

In almost every case violence is not justified.
However, there is one case upon which I am still torn. If others are threatened with violence, am I justified in using violence to protect them? I do not believe I am justified in using violence to protect myself from violence. Therefore, I tentatively lean towards the view that I am not justified in using violence to protect others either since should have that expectation of them as well. Perhaps it is sufficient to say that if violence were to be justified it would only be in the case where it was used to defend those who are being threatened by violence.

I guess another question here would have to be what people consider to be violence?
Do you consider a physical form of self-defense to be violence? At what point in the action of self-defense does it go beyond "just defending" yourself and possibly progress into "unjustified" violence?
