To many patriots, Black Friday is a national past-time. The drowsiness brought about by stuffing ourselves with turkey and fried green beans has worn off; in its place is want and energy. More people care about Black Friday than even voting! But why shouldn't they? Politics is a boring business, after all.
All you as an average citizen do is watch the tube and listen to people go back and forth in 30 second sound bytes about why their candidate is superior. What's the fun in that when you can be out consuming in the name of culture? Boosting the economy! It's just.. patriotic! Politics stink like my cat. But Giftmas! Hallelujah ![]() Look at all the kids' faces light up. No, it's not a new kids meal at Burger King. It's debt! More precisely, their family's debt. I get butterflies in my stomach watching parents run around frantically trying to find their kid the best items they can "afford." Just don't forget to show up at church to negate your sin with your deep remorse for the living conditions of most humans. Okay, church is out. Back to the real world! ![]() All this consumption is wonderful news for the business owners. Profits are up! Sales are at record highs! The price for oil continues to climb! Overseas markets are supplying us with really, really, cheap goods! Small competition is being bought off left and right ... and center! Our exhausted workforce can deal with any and all problems. After all, it's not like this concept of being overworked is a new one to them. Replacing decent jobs with part-time work and paying managers based on salary is just one of the many ways we've watched ourselves get almost 400x richer in the past 30+ years. Those twerps actually thought they could get us to pay overtime. Didn't they realize we were only playing nice to not bring about a social upheaval like what happened during the 30s? Pension plans, they said. Here's your pension plan, worker bee. Uncle Sam has it all hidden away in a sock -- one sock. You should be grateful we didn't take it all away. After all, we need you to buy our crappy goods until you're dead and buried -- with the help of our half-off shovels. Keep consuming. Our workers in China can meet any demand for American Eagle tees.

Do I detect a note of sarcasm, Gene, or is that just me?

In accordance with regular procedure: I am not anti-Christmas, anti-shopping, anti-culture, anti-church, nor anti-America. I have no qualms with gift giving and receiving.

Quite a quaint rant.
