What do you care about?
Perhaps the question could be refined further to ask... "What do you actively care about?" It's probably fair enough to observe that most of us "care about" the things that most of the rest of us care about...things like impartial justice, compassion, peace, love, empathy, devotion, "truth", duty...etc. With the rare exception of truly sociopathic individuals, "people" just want the same opportunity as everyone/anyone else to live well, and within the fullness of each of our own capacities and dreams. So...what are you doing to make it happen? What are you doing to effect a positive result in the things you care about the most? [For the sake of discussion, and invitation of more honest/earnest replies, I would request that respondents refrain from indulging obvious and/or vague answers, like: "I want to make the world a better place", or; "I want my kids to have a better life than my own", or; "I want the world to live in peace", or: "I want everyone to know God" These are espoused ideals, not actions. Please elaborate upon what you are doing now, today...to effect either change or some positive result on the the one thing you care about the most.] Poverty. Addiction. Intolerance/Prejudice. Violence/War. Human dignity/rights. Impartial and fair Justice. Freedom (of thought and deeds). Global Climate Change. Education/information/elucidation. Access to health care. Access to clean water, safe food. Conservation of natural resources. Ethical treatment of animals. Illegal immigration. And the list goes on... What part do you play? What do you actually DO about what you care about the most? [Note: If you care about global climate change, and you recycle your disposable plastics, you're doing something to effect a change for the better. This thread is not intended as some forum for comparisons/measures of personalized flagellations, nor some hairshirt-wearing sacrifices of self-serving interests. It's not presented as some "contest" of either piety or obligation. The OP stands, as asked...]

And another one's gone
And another one's gone Another one bites the dust... Maybe I should be inviting people to reveal their favorite color instead...

I care about the advancement of the Leftist movement, because I selfishly believe it is my duty to help others. At this stage in human history where the participants of almost every country in the world either grudgingly or openly accept capitalism, the extent to which I can contribute to what I view as the greater injustice is limited to small things like refusing to partake in companies known for greater exploitation even by social democrats, correcting the public's misunderstandings, and what I believe is most important -- helping people believe in each other.
However, I am currently saving up enough money to start a worker run co-op [as best I can given laws], hoping to use it as a model of what's to come. Don't know if I answered the question correctly.

![]() I have very lofty ideals which are also obscure in some ways and I think about them all the time. As for what I actually do, I give money and do occasional work for charity. I give mostly to Amnesty and other organisations that try to help desperate people overseas while work I do here myself is usually collecting or leaflet spreading. Its not wonderful and I did used to work for charities and adult education as my main work but I got so poor I started to need charity myself! So, I started working in IT support for charities connected to the local government as a stop-gap until I'm qualified and experienced enough to do such a thing directly for some ethical organisation. Its also important for me to earn enough to support my girlfriend so she can spend her time in creative endeavours. I have a strong creative streak myself but she's much more talented than me so if I can do that for her then things are good. I need to see her have such opportunities because it makes her happy and enables her to do what she really was born to do. Environmental stuff is also a concern so I try to diminish pollution that I create through living. Maybe the topic is so hard because no one feels like they do enough.

Poverty. -- to be honest I don't care all that much about poverty. I'd be lying if I said I did. Addiction. -- I don't care about drug addicts. Anyone who knows anything about drug addiction will tell you that you simply cannot help people who don't want to help themselves. Intolerance/Prejudice. - I simply don't care about this hot button either. I am suprisingly tolerand and diplomatic in "real" life and am not racially prejudice. Violence/War. -- I do not care about violence and war, then again I am not a violent person. Human dignity/rights. - I don't care about this much either although I try to treat people with the dignity they deserve as that is their right. Impartial and fair Justice. - Justice is a tart that goes to he who has the most money. Freedom (of thought and deeds). - I do care about this but the RF rulebook does not allow me to express my thoughts freely. Global Climate Change. - I do not care the slightest about global warning even if that is an inconvenient truth for many. Education/information/elucidation. - This is very important to me and I try my best to be informed all the time. Pity some do not agree with my conclusions, but I still try my best to explain my positions as clearly as I am able. For the most part, I do that very well. Access to health care. - I am more interested in maintaining wellness and understanding the relationships between actions and habits that give rise to dis-ease. Plus I am Canadian... we already have so-called "universal" health care and contrary to Michel Moore's ramblings it is NOT free. We pay for it with our taxes and for someone like me who is never ill to begin with -- I don't get much return on my dollars spent. Access to clean water, safe food. -- I am more concerned about population controls and speak my mind on the issue at the drop of a hat. Conservation of natural resources. - I don't care about this too much, perhaps when everything is exhausted people will begin to pay attention though. Ethical treatment of animals. -- I love animals but am not keen about groups like PETA. I have donated money to the SPCA over the years. Illegal immigration. -- Show me an illigal alien and I'll call the proper authorites in a heartbeat. What part do you play? -- I am a teacher really and my role is to attempt to educate the human animals to the best of my abilities. It is a rather dull genus though so patience is required. What do you actually DO about what you care about the most? Every moment of every day I help to increase the awareness of those who come in contact with me. Some days, I do better than on others. I actually don't expect people to learn much from me, but if I can make them laugh or smile and ease their burdens just a bit then I am a least making some progress.

There is no "incorrect" answer.... I was only inviting RF members to share whatever actions they (personally) lend to whatever (social/economic/political/theologic/ethical/moral) concerns they consider motivationally important to themselves. Thanks (and frubals) for sharing, and taking the bait...;-)

I care deeply about the welfare of children who already exist on the planet. What do I do to show I care? Volunteer at local day care centers for less fortunate youth... Give money to any charity I feel is worthy of monetary attention I'm seriously considering becoming a foster parent in the very near future.. I talk to young mothers and give out knowledge (when asked) about a myriad of topics regarding kids. I want to do more and am always on the lookout for ways to make the life better/easier and more loving for a kid somewhere. |
