What attributes are neccesary in order for something to be worthy of respect?
Is the value of respect cheapened if we make this criteria broader?

Whatever respect actually is, it needs to be earned, and not granted freely. Not that we shouldn't treat unknown people with respect, just that we should not respect them, until they have proved that they are worth it. It is possible to hate someone and respect them. It is possible to love someone and have no respect.

I think respect is earned by merely being a fellow human being.
He who respects others is higher in my book than he who is merely respected

I think respect should be freely given initially but earned when a broader relationship is entered into. Personally, I find it very hard to respect someone who does not respect me. If there were any criteria necessary it involves a receprocal relationship.

Respect is not an even mixture... it is very lumpy.
You can be respected for things others hate you for. It is most unlikely every one can respect you......

But can you not hate someone for a certain action or view of theirs, and yet still respect them Terry?

respect, in my mind has nothing to do with agreement, love, sympathy.....etc there is anohter kind of respect. i guess it is more like combination of respect, love, agreement, admiration and people has to earn it naturally. |
