What's the point of the death penalty? According to the weight of scientific evidence, it does not work as a deterrent, so what good is it?

to make sure there is no feasible chance the person can do harm to anyone, ever again. and before you say "well what if we lock them up forever" we've had people escape from alcatraz, so i bet some determined criminal can escape from some random prison. chances are slim, yes, but what if he got out and murdered your child? i bet you might wanna push for the death penalty then. it has its places in very, very extreme cases. other then that solitary confinement for the rest of the persons life sounds good enough.

Is it really about deterrent or how much it cost the US to keep them alive per year?
I think the average is 114.00 dollers a day so what about $40,000? What is the going cost now a days for a life?

Then we'll have to agree to disagree:

Well my guess way wrong although that is why it seems most americans support the death penalty.
It actually cost more to execute them. Backing the Death Penalty: Expectations vs. Reality -- Arehart-Treichel 37 (14): 2 -- Psychiatr News Just incase it is of interest to anyone.

I suggest that there are more factors that go into the homocide rate than the death penalty.
