Suppose you wanted to become less self-centered. What would be the best way to go about doing that? Why?
Does being in pain make you more or make you less self-centered? Does being in love make you more or make you less self-centered? Does doing something you are passionate about make you more or make you less self-centered? Does being true to yourself make you more or make you less self-centered?

Go through suffering. When you are at your weakest is when you can find your greatest strength and realizing that the chaos of this world can be a humbling experience.

I think the best way is to stop talking. If you're no longer talking (and thereby demanding that others pay attention to you) you will have much more time to pay attention to others and figure out about them.

Realize that nothing in the world is ours not even our bodies because we cannot take anything when we die. Realize that we are all brothers and sisters in spirit and therefore equal.

To me, part of "love" means putting yourself in relationship with an object ("not-me"). If you put yourself in relationship with something, you and it become as a unit. Your relationship with another person means you will consider them as well as yourself in all your decisions. Your relationship with your environment means that you will consider what's best for both in all your actions. Your relationship with your creator means that you consider all of creation, including you, in all you think and are.
So I would say that understanding the relationship is the means to less selfishness, and love will come naturally.
