HOUSTON - Texas had the nation's highest birth rate among teenagers ages 15 to 19 in 2004, according to a newly released study of children's health. The Kids Count study, which is updated annually by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, said the Texas rate of 63 births per 1,000 teens remained the same from 2003 to 2004.
More......... "Observers were divided on whether Texas' emphasis on abstinence in sex education contributes to the state's relatively high numbers. A 1995 law requires school districts to emphasize abstinence in sex education classes. "It's a touchy subject," said Robert Sanborn, president of Children at Risk. "We can preach abstinence quite a bit, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't affect some kids, and apparently it's really not working in Texas." "Don McLeroy, president of the State Board of Education, noted that sex education is mainly a local issue, with state law requiring each district to have a local committee that decides what will be taught." I don't understand how anyone can deny that an abstinence emphasized sex ed program promotes pregnancy. The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the industrialized world. When are parents going to stop kidding themselves? |

There are about ten girls (that I know of) in my high school of 1,500 who either just had a child or are currently pregnant. And my school is one of the best in the state...

And by your version of "safe sex" you mean "abstinence-only safe sex", right, rocka?
When will adults realize that doesn't work? Last edited by Nihilo; 07-26-2007 at 08:55 AM. |

IMO Sexual Education, like math, science and English, needs to be taught by those who are thoroughly trained and educated on the subject matter.

Isn't the purpose of school to educate?
What's wrong with telling a child the failure rates of contraceptives as opposed to abstinence? The parent still attains the right to tell his or her kid what path they expect from them. I'll tell you what the school's job isn't: to keep children ignorant. For some reason parents think of ignorance as some usefool tool for their children, from science class [evolution] to sex ed [condoms] and health [eating right] and history [role of religion].

i agree, but i also think its a moral issue also. The " moral" part should be taught at home by the parents. but i do think the schools should teach also. |

i agree, but if your teen gets pregnant , you should not say " if only that school would have told my baby to use protection!" the school could help, but the buck stops with the parent. |
