Why are girls performing better and better in our schools, but boys are starting to fall behind? Should schools redesign their systems to better meet the boys' needs, or do boys need to settle down, show more motivation, and behave better? With all the pressures on teachers as-is, how can we support them in this endeavor? Is the solution to divide the sexes entirely into separate classrooms or even schools, as some have done?

Boys are being influenced by society to focus on things other than school. Girls often mature faster and focus sooner. Dividing the sexes has nothign to do with it, i beleive it's all in the enviornment and how one raises their child.

I think it's a bit of both--we need to understand the changing conditions in grade schools if we're going to learn even what to ask of the students. For one thing, recess is becoming shorter or being left out altogether in many U.S. schools. Could it be that boys have a harder time studying with no break to run around? Makes sense to me. Also, schools are "teaching to the test" earlier and earlier. Although, historically boys have done better in test-oriented environments, so that part stumps me.
At that age, I remember girls calling boys "icky" and "weird", and vice versa, and everyone loving the "boys vs girls" type contests. Maybe young boys have started associating being a good student with girls, and therefore it's "icky". Maybe not, just an idea. I wouldn't be for sex-segregated classrooms. The social effects can be harmful. Plus, if the trouble is behavior, then the presence of role models is very important. If many of the best students are girls, the boys should be able to see them at work. Last edited by Inky; 06-29-2007 at 02:37 PM. |

Honestly, I don't know how you can practically go about diving kids by their gender without having anarchy in the public school system.

There was a time when Girls only did better in primary schools.
Then they did better in secondary schools. They are now doing better at University and getting better degrees. Probably they have always been better. It is Just that it was men setting the rules and deciding the qualities that counted. The same trends are showing in all western societies, and races.

Perhaps it has something to do with this: boys are more susceptible to heavy metal poisoning because testosterone may play a role in the onset of neurodegenerative diseases while estrogen is an antioxidant.

Here on the East Coast it's not heavy metal that's the problem. But rap and R&B. Boys here walk around (shirtless), and literally, with their butts hanging out of their pants (clean underwear or not). Aids has run rampant here as teens sleep around with each other with no moral standard. They treat women as sex objects, and women dont seem to reject the notion of it....they become more horny than anything else, they have no self control. Kids today are focusing less on school and more on self- that is, money, cars, girls, and sex. And let's not forget drugs....and the pressure to look like Beyonce or Denzel....
These things are of the World, and children today love these things. 1jo 2:15"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1jo 2:16 "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. The things I bolded are what's affecting our society today. Last edited by JayHawes; 06-29-2007 at 02:47 PM. |

I doubt it is a joke, we have the same problem here, much like JayHawes stated it. rap sings alot about... other things, most of which I cannot say here, while the band I listen to "Amon Amarth" is very melodic death metal, and some of the lyrics inspire Honor, Courage, and Independance. most of the lyrics are violent in nature... but nothing compared to what rap can accomplish. for instance, the song "Runes to my memory" lyrics

now when I listen to this, I am actually inspired, and do better in school and act more mature. |
