Should Sex Offenders Be Allowed To Teach Kids? (hell, America)

Should sex offenders who have served their time be allowed to become teachers in public or private schools?

If not, does that mean they are still being punnished even after they have served their time? And if they are, is that justified? Why or why not?

If so, why should they be allowed to teach kids?

IMO it should be taken on a case-by-case basis. If the offender was prosecuted for having sex with someone close to them in age but was, by law, illegal, I think they shouldn't be treated the same as someone who raped or molested a child.

The definition of sex offender in this country is very wide. Not all sex offenders are pedophiles. I think this question though in intent is should pedophiles who have been through the prison system be allowed to teach school. If treatement for the mental illness of pedophilia and other similar disordes was a result of a prison term and could be judged effective then I would not have a huge problem with it.

But as things are I think it is a bad idea. It would be like allowing an alcoholic to get a job as a brewer or wine taster. There is just too much temtation.

I would say no. Each person has trust in strangers everyday, even driving you put a hell of a lot of trust in others around you and when someone breaks the law then that trust has gone.
As the saying goes, prevention is better then cure.

the term sex offender has been widened to such an extent in recent years that it includes people who would be no danger to children at all.

At sentence, it should be declared who they would be a danger to.
If that includes children then they should be banned.

I agree with these two posts.

I know a fellow in Ohio who has to register as a sex offender because when he was 19 he had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend and her parents were not liking it.
Funny thing is that here 5+ years later, they are happily married and have two children. But he stil has to maintain current information for the sex registery

You must have different laws in America. That would have been allowed in England. Unless he raped and abused her of course (but if they are happily married I dont think he did!). The age for legal sex is 16. If the girl (or boy) is below that age it is considered a sex offense. If they are 12 or below its statory (cant spell) rape (even if they consented).

But to the original post - I think he really depends on the case - generally I would say no I dont think they should be allowed to teach kids, especially if they were teachers in the first place and "fell in love" with one of his/her students! The case you just described - if he wanted to teach he should be allowed! they were both consenting people who proved that they loved each other!
