Who here is sick of all the hoohar these days about, well let's just call it as it is, namecalling? The old saying "sticks and stones......." just doesn't work anymore. Everybody seems to get so worked up about being called this and that. I was a migrant to this country (Australia) and was called a "wog" many times as a kid, and never gave a rats. It's water off a duck's back to me. As a policeman I get called a "pig" or worse everyday, and again, I couldn't care less. Why should I let it bother me, for if it does, that's me letting it bother me. I'm not insecure. I know who I am.
I don't have to go into all the names that get bandied about for all the various peoples in this world, but why do they get so upset and sook up to authorities and then the caller gets sued for vilification. I get called an Aussie. Should I be offended? What for? And yet I can no longer call an aboriginal an "Abo" for short. I had best friends that were aboriginals. "And that's another thing. I resent the fact that you people use the term fruits. That's our term for you queers." - Homer Simpson. Last edited by kadzbiz; 05-19-2007 at 03:25 AM. Reason: tidying up |

The question I was wondering was when did we empower words with more than just letters, vowels and consonants? Does the word f(please refrain from that kind of language on RF) hold the same offense in another language ? Last edited by cardero; 05-20-2007 at 04:09 AM. |

Sometimes it's not just personal, but about the enviornment as a whole and to not encourage members to insult each other, because that might cause the insulted one to leave the place if he/she was senstive about such things. Human beings are not the same.

Some names don't hurt at all. I was always deep in thought so I was called things like "space cadet", NDR (No Drugs Required), Ozone, and other similiar type things. It didn't bother me (mostly because it was true and they meant it kindly and not offensively).
But... I was called a racial slur once, I am one half Navajo and some people mistake me for being Mexican (Not that I'd mind being Mexican or anything if I was) I was called the racial slur that starts with an "s" word meant for people of that ethnic group. I was very hurt by that. That and the person saying it was a child I didn't know and it was said in a very nasty tone with a very nasty look. I wasn't doing anything to the child. I blamed the child's parents for this. I am older now and it does not hurt me anymore. The bible says that the tongue can be a like a double edged sword. Next time, I will duck from the sword. Kadzbiz- I respect any man or woman of the law and would never call them a name like pig. People are disrepectful of police officers in America, too.
