Do you recycle? Why do you recycle?
Does recycling actually save the environment, the community, the world? Is recycling really worth it? |

I recycle and compost. I don't know about recycling, but composting helps. The food is allowed to breakdown, whereas in a landfill, all the air is packed out of the garbage, so food cannot break down, at least not nearly as easily. Recycling is at least free (here, anyway), so it's not like it costs anything to do it. I have heard from non-reputable sources that it actually does more damage to recylce, and if that were backed up by some scholarly research I will reconsider, but as it is, it's exactly as easy to recycle as it is to throw away, so why not?

we compost...but that is because it helps plants grow better...we reuse things alot, and we follow the yellow let it mellow, brown flush it down philosophy in my house...
and we use all CCFL lights in the house (well execpt for a few lights that havent blown yet, once they do we will replace , but not for any other reason than to help our light bill and avoid buying lights so often)

ohh and Penn and Teller have an episode of BullSh!t that adresses recycling, the evidence they found showed that recycling, in every case but aluminum can recycling, we a waste and usually cost more to the environment than getting new products

The European Union has set recycling targets that the EU countries must try to equal or exceed. In the UK we therefore have to separate our refuse (garbage) into various types (general, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic). However, the exact categories, and what actually gets recycled, varies from place to place. The local councils make the decisions here, but have to recycle enough to meet their targets.
How much good it does is open to debate, but it is generally accepted as being worthwhile if it is organised properly and is on a large enough scale. A lot of recycling is done in order to reduce the amount of space needed to dump all the rubbish. We are running out of landfill sites, and dumping at sea is not very "green". There is no need to dump it if you recycle it.

Recycling uses less energy to make, for example, a glass bottle than it does to create one from scratch. Recycling paper/cardboard saves on the number of trees that need to be cut down (although people probably cut them down anyway). Recycling metal should reduce the amount of mining needed for fresh metal. Recycling also reduces the amount going into landfill, and so less new landfills need to be created. I think the evidence Penn and Teller found, was most likely acquired from the rear end of a horse.
