WASHINGTON (AP) -- Without immigrants pouring into the nation's big metro areas, places such as New York, Los Angeles and Boston would be losing population.
Many smaller areas, including Battle Creek, Michigan, Ames, Iowa, and Corvallis, Oregon, would lose people as well, according to population estimates released Thursday by the Census Bureau.
"Immigrants are filling the void as domestic migrants are seeking opportunities in other places," said Mark Mather, a demographer at the Population Reference Bureau, a private research organization.

My first response.....since when did we have a population problem...I thought lower populations would be a good thing no?

Population problem = work-force problem. Cities need to maintain populations in order to maintain the infrastructure of a city. Decreases in population usually go hand in hand with economic depression.

I would think unemployment would be at close to 0%. Unless immigrants are taking jobs from average joe's.

From what I can see (at least out here in California), most immigrants are doing the jobs that no one wants to do.

I agree, I've heard this also. I'm just surprised to hear about population decrease problems. I don't really keep tabs on population events either, I was just kinda shocked.

This is correct. Many businesses don't mind Mexicans coming here in droves, because they're a cheap source of labor.
