Tipping issues (America, experience, service)

I was just wondering what everyone's take on tipping is. I am getting sick and tired of these people that have pretty decent paying jobs that have tip jars EVERYWHERE for work they are supposed to do anyway! Starbucks is a good example.
Also, for those of you who have worked in the restaurant industry, whom do you feel is the poorest tippers, and why?

Is working for Starbucks decent paying?

I think tipping is important in some industries and not in others. I've worked in the food service industry for way too long, and I sincerely believe that waitresses and waiters deserve those tips. Actually, I think the underpaid dishwashers and short order cooks do too...

I don't agree with lowering waitstaff wages to under minimum in order to compensate for tips. Tips should be given voluntarily for a job well done, and should not be an excuse made by management to underpay their hard workers.

If the waiter/waitress is good, and treats us even semi-kind, my husband and I leave anywhere from $5-$20 on the table.

If we get treated crappy, $3 is the most the usually get, but that's rarely happened. We understand that getting money when you are waiting tables can be a hard job, so we try to help people out the most that we can.

Especially in Idaho. Idaho's minimum wage is one of the lowest in the country; $5.15.

Old people and europeans. I think its because in europe the tips are included in the check, but they aren't in America remember. We get payed 2 dollars an hour tips are basically our income.

I don't agree with the whole percentage of the bill because honestly if you go to some local joint with cheap food and some big joint like Red Lobster, the waitresses still do the same amout of work. I hate the percentage thing.

And forgien people tip the worst usually because tons of countries don't do the tip thing. And college students, because they are broke

I can agree with the old people, but the Europeans and usually pretty good about tipping. I have found that overall, blacks are by far the worst tippers(working at a very popular seafood restaurant I have had much experience ). I am not saying that they are all poor tippers, just as a general rule out of any culture that I come across they are the worst. I would also put kids under the age of 16 in the same category. Arabs are by far the best tippers!

I have said get rid of the percentage for a long time now. However, people always tip based on the size of the bill, which is why I hate working during lunch!

Yeah, my friends and I go to Steak and Shake every wednesday during third shift so those people get gipped alot. We usually adopt one waiter or waitress and want only them. (acutally the first one we adopted has now been dating one of our friends of almost a year) We tip her really good because we are there for hours and she tells us that we are a huge source of her money for the night! We tip her well because she has our table set up at 10:30 with coffee, water, lemons, and a coke and they are always at the right seats because she knows where all of us like to sit!

Maybe it's just because I live in Maine, but that's insanely good for handing out coffee.

At least, it would be up here.
