Cool is a calm and reasoned response to an unknown and not anticipated variable. Whether it is an unexpected happening at 130 feet under water or getting news that your server just took a powder, how you handle it determines your "cool ratio" for me.

James Bond was only cool because he had a gun and gadgets. In fact, most movie stars are cool because they have great scripts... everything is planned, including the variables.

If you think you are cool, then you are most definitely NOT. Sorry, but that's the way I see it. It has nothing to do with how you dress or the persona you project... it's how you react to pressure. Unmitigated, relentless, in yo face pressure that needs to be dealt with NOW, NOW, NOW!

Am I cool? That's for others to decide.

I know vaguely what cool is. I also know that it rarely dictates the activities that I enjoy (Chess, maths, religion!) but it is a factor that concerns me due to low self confidence.

Whilst I often do not like things simply because they are "cool", if I like something on other merits and it also happens to be cool then I find that this helps to provide a more lasting appeal. For example, the Matrix.

Coolness is about having the ability (or at least managing to give the impression of the ability) to do a specific activity perfectly. So the way Neo is able to deal with opponents is cool because of how he overcomes each and every one. In my opinion James Bond loses some coolness in this area because the strength of his enemies is always undermined by his ever unquestioned abilities. So whilst his abilities are definitely cool, the lack of apparent challenge lessens their impact.
