Default Rise of the Machines

NetDoc mentioned Skynet (Terminator 3) in one of his posts, and that got me to thinking...could we, or will we, get to the point where machines become self-aware? Do you think the movie touches on a possible reality for us? Is any of it plausible?

Tigress -

I think that this may eventually become an issue, but we are quite a ways away from that yet. We don't know enough about what self-awareness IS, yet, to be able to decide just how or when it might occur in machines. I read lots of different science fiction, and this is one of the perennial themes of the genre; there are so many different scenarios available from so many different authors that I can't even begin to list them.

I don't think it's possible for them to become self aware, but people can write programs that help machines learn from mistakes (this has already been done). However, I don't think a machine can revolt, change it's own programming, and try to take over the world without user intervention. Although, I'm sure that someone could create a nasty program for a machine that would tell the machine to kill humans .
