We tried that here. It didn't work out well, just gave a big boost to organized crime. I don't know if our "get tough" approach to drinking and driving is working or not. In this area as in so many others, I think cheap, efficient public transportation would be a great help.
I remember reading an article about alcohol-related traffic fatalities in The Irish Times years ago. The article said that many of the fatalities in Ireland were the result of "pedestrians" being struck by automobiles, but not always because the driver had been drinking: in many cases, the "pedestrian" was lying prone in the road. ![]()

drugs are being banned, smoking is being banned, alcohol is being banned,....
I would like to have some products to have the abillity to cross the line please.. If you take everything away, you can't really say that you are living in a free country now can you? They are banning more and more and still we look strange when they block certain sites in China, while they are doing exactly the same in the "free" west..

Shouldn't freedom include the ability to do things that may be harmful to ourselves, even if we know the risks and choose to do it anyway? For the number of people who die a death related to alcohol, there are a greater number of people who drink responsibly. Just because some people aren't smart enough to do that doesn't mean that the government has to now step in and take away that pleasure from everyone.
Life is not safe - there are sharp edges and you will get cut. Not too deeply if you're careful. Not too careful, but just careful enough. People don't need to be protected from themselves.

Well I guess theres dying through choice or just dying slowly, either way it's going to happen. I agree with MB, it would just increase crime.

Alchohol consumption actually went down in the United States following the end of prohibition.
Alchohol, tobacco, gambling, prostitution, marijuana, abortion -- outlawing them has done nothing to stop them and the resources are best used elsewhere. -Erin |

Alchohol consumption is a major problem in england, binge drinking it appears is now seen as the norm,go out anywhere on a friday night and you see some really bad sights in our towns cities and villages,i don't think restiction or banning would stop it,most drugs are illegal you can still get anything you want on the streets...the only way forward is education and responsible parenting of the coming generations, imho.

Hell no! Keep the alcohol flowing!
The law is their to protect people from other people. Not to protect people from themselves.
