Sex is not at the root of every action I take. It may be for some people, but it is not for me.

I feel common is a much better desciptor than normal.

What's the difference between something being normal and something being common?

Is it possible to take a step back from heterosexuality and see it for just how weird it really is?

As sahra-t says, it is the heterosexual realationships that continue the species. If you look at men and women physically, their sexual organs are naturally "compatible", and that is simply not the case in a same sex couple. From that perspective you could perhaps claim heterosexuality to be normal in that, sexually, man and woman are naturally compatible.

Perhaps to you, man and woman are naturally compatible. I can tell you unequivocably that, for me, woman and woman are naturally compatible. Our ability (or lack thereof) to produce offspring is irrelevant. Would you claim that heterosexual couples who cannot, or choose not to produce offspring are abnormal, too?

I generally think of normality as a matter of degree. The greater the percentage of a population that exhibits the trait in question the more "normal" the trait is. Those who choose to designate a certain percentile as a normal/abnormal boundary are free to do so, with the understanding that this is a subjective and probably arbitrary percentile.

No I would not say that and I'm not saying that people of the same gender can't have sexual relations; I only gave my point purely in relation to how man and woman are naturally formed.
