This thread was inspired by Jensa's Kill A Gay Get $4500 thread and mrscardero who attended a Gay Pride festival in our hometown recently.
I will just start the discussion with that question.

I'd like it if it weren't, certainly. But I think it's overall a good thing. There's still an awful lot of prejudice out there, I don't see a problem with something in the name of being proud of yourself, not ashamed. In an ideal world there'd be no need for it...but when you live in a world with a great deal of straight pride (this is not a criticism, mind, but society is very big on heterosexuality), it's nice to have a break.

Do you think that it achieves what it sets out to do (for example inform or help to overcome prejudice) or does Gay Pride gatherings bring unwanted attention to the people who participate in it? The only reason I ask is because I never attended one of these gatherings.

Prejudice must needs be confronted. I would add, personally, non-violently. I base that opinion on the non-violent confrontations of oppression and prejudice by Te Whiti O Rongomai, Ghandi and Martin Luther King.
If we allow prejudice/ Bigotry/ Oppression to rise up unconfronted they will, inevitably, cloud judgements, dim the human vision of God in all people and do violence to the belief that all are, in some sense, created in God's image and likeness. Kiwimac

I attended one such parade in Wash DC when "don't ask, don't tell" was understood as a failure by the LGBTI community. I carried a placard that berated the military action to homosexuals. The only objection publically was by the contingent belonging to Fred Phelps. |

Fred Phelps objected to a gay pride parade? Imagine that!
The gay pride parade here in town is my second favorite parade of the year, right after the festival of lights parade. Good fun, both!

While I think it sad that there is a need for Gay Pride (or any form of someone needing to 'make a statement' in public to obtain recognition), I must support it.
The point is there ought to be no need.
