You tend to find that when sections of society have been hard done-by, they feel the need to not only reclaim, or in the case of gays claim, their status but to ensure it is never lost through such open expression. There is no "straight parade" because heterosexuals feel more secure about their status in society.

Yes. I have yet to experience a Pride where I havent cried. In regards to the Queens and Kings, during Stonewall who was on the street fighting for our rights? It wasn't Ellen Degeneres. It was the tranny's the drag queens, the butches, the high femmes. These are forms of expressions that go back CENTURIES.
There will always be a need for pride. we have fought tooth and nail to get the rights we have, and we will have to continue to fight for our lives, our relationships, our children, our rights probably for the rest of our generation AT LEAST. I personally celebrate gay pride every time i walk down the street holding my honey's hand.

Well, then I suppose we should also stop people from going to shows in Vegas. Showgirls (and a considerable number of men within thier ranks) dress like that all the time for the entertainment of others. That's not as good of a reason as wanting to show personal pride. So, since the rule is if some people don't like it then it's unecessary, showgirls will have to go too.

If you don't want to watch a *insert minority here* pride parade, then don't go. It's just that simple. It doesn't have to be necessary in your eyes for gay men and women, or any other ethnic or minority group to get meaning from it.
I personally have my own issues with some of the Hispanic pride parades that have gone on in the city, but those problems are my own personal ones, and I'm not about to say that because I don't like these parades that they shouldn't happen.

Tell that to the Irish. Across America, Irish march in a St. Paddy's Day parade mostly for pride of being Irish. Some will join the festivities for the partying.

The Irish have been treated a good deal worse by the English than homosexuals have.

Some of us even dance in fancy dress. If my over-2-3s are good enough next year, maybe my daughter won't be too embarassed to join me in a 2-hand.

I'm so jealous! I've always wanted to learn how to do it, but I've never found someplace to take lessons. =(
