Default What is the American Dream?

What is the real American Dream in your opinion?

(foreigners are also welcome to answer this)

How does this compare to the way people in America actually act? Do most people seem to be pursing the Dream?

Is the American Dream attainable? Is it becoming less attainable?

Who in your opinion...famous or not...is living (or has lived) this Dream?

My opinion:

Quote:

That anyone can make a lot of money doing something they truly enjoy.

Quote:

I think most try, but certainly not everyone succeeds. For many, it soon morphs into "to make a lot of money by any means possible".

Quote:
Is the American Dream attainable? Is it becoming less attainable?
Certainly attainable. I believe america is in the middle of a recession right now, so it is more difficult than in the recent past (late-90s).

Quote:

Most actors or professional athletes, any .com millionaire who survived the bubble burst, successful authors, Richard Simmons, etc...

To live as freely as you can, with the least ammount of restrictions possible.

Quote:

I think we're too restricting. While we're certainly better than most countries (in regard to humane treatment, free capital), we certainly have a long way to go. I say most people try to pursue it economically, but socially and politically we've struggled. Recently (past 50 years) there seems to be a big push, though.

Yes, attainable.

Quote:

Bill Gates comes to mind..

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"--I do not tie the American Dream to money.

From what I understand "The American Dream" has always been connected to coming from poverty/no fiscal excess/barely surviving/Socialist control of economy/etc. to America, working hard, earning lots of money, and then "living the good life" and passing it on to ones offspring...

Most people try to make a niche in which they survive comfortably, some go for the "Dream" and try to become rich...

It is probably more attainable today then in days past... sports wealth for instance, my dad remembers when football/basketball/golf players made a fraction of what they do now...

Bill gates/Professional Atheletes/Musicians/Actors and Actresses/etc. are all people who have attained the "Dream"...

Self-direction.

To become a "self-made man" (or woman).

Essentially, the ability to navigate one's own course in life; to live by one's values, judgment, and conscience; and to earn one's prosperity. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I think it is more than just having money for its own sake. It is more a kind of desire for personal independence and self-respect.

Not too sure to be honest, being English, I don't get to see the American dream in practice.

I certainly hope so. I'd like to have a shot at it myself one day maybe.

I always think Herbert Hoover when this question or something similar comes up. He grafted hard, stuck at it and got the most powerful job in the world! Turned out to be a pretty bad career move though, poor guy!
