What is the real American Dream in your opinion?
(foreigners are also welcome to answer this) How does this compare to the way people in America actually act? Do most people seem to be pursing the Dream? Is the American Dream attainable? Is it becoming less attainable? Who in your opinion...famous or not...is living (or has lived) this Dream? |

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"--I do not tie the American Dream to money.

From what I understand "The American Dream" has always been connected to coming from poverty/no fiscal excess/barely surviving/Socialist control of economy/etc. to America, working hard, earning lots of money, and then "living the good life" and passing it on to ones offspring...
Most people try to make a niche in which they survive comfortably, some go for the "Dream" and try to become rich... It is probably more attainable today then in days past... sports wealth for instance, my dad remembers when football/basketball/golf players made a fraction of what they do now... Bill gates/Professional Atheletes/Musicians/Actors and Actresses/etc. are all people who have attained the "Dream"...

To become a "self-made man" (or woman). Essentially, the ability to navigate one's own course in life; to live by one's values, judgment, and conscience; and to earn one's prosperity. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I think it is more than just having money for its own sake. It is more a kind of desire for personal independence and self-respect. eudaimonia, Mark |
