Ahhh...the old Kipling quote. I used that as a title in a series of papers. I must upload them as articles sometime. I have to say, when he points the finger at himself he is referring to the greatest Jihad, called Jihad An Nafs, which is the fight against ones own self.

Well I suppose that implication is there. Actually tho', Jihad an Nafs, considered as the Greatest War, is the fight against ones own Ego (see link in previous post). I think this is what he was referring to.

Not really for us to judge that. In situations like this it is a case of one's own conscience (re: cleric and 'congregation'). We have no hierarchy (spiritual) in Islam, other than maybe the prophets. In fact when Gabriel brought Muhammad forward in time to see the Mahdi and Jesus, Jesus is asked to lead the prayer as he is a prophet, and he replies that he will not, he will take his place amongst the believers stating 'The value in this way of life (deen) is that the believers lead each other.' The Mahdi then leads the prayer and Jesus takes his place amongst the believers.
